Gibsons, BC - Sunshine Coast

Short Ferry Ride, A World Away

Sunshine Coast Ferry from VancouverIt was less than two years ago that I called downtown Vancouver home. I lived in the heart of the concrete giants as part of the mass of people who scurried among the one-way streets to work, the grocery store or the local pubs.  Everything was within a short walk or SkyTrain ride. What I didn’t realize is that perhaps I needed a bit more distance. As in 40 minutes.

One sunny July weekend, my husband and I embarked on an adventure that would ultimately change our life’s trajectory.  It all started with a 40 minute ferry ride to the Sunshine Coast, BC.

The ferry ride from West Vancouver’s Horseshoe Bay to Sunshine Coast’s Langdale terminal is a scenic trip through the Howe Sound channel, with beautiful views of Bowen Island, Gambier Island and the coastal mountains.  The water is often smooth as glass with the occasional ripple from wildlife, orcas and seals.

From the Gibsons hill, at night, you can see the city glow of Vancouver just over the mountains. It is only 40 minutes away, but the feel of the laid back, relaxing environment of the Sunshine Coast makes it seem that much further. It’s like taking a Hawaiian vacation in your backyard.

Gibsons offers just a slower way of life that centers around fostering the community.  It is a hub of creative talent and outdoor recreation.  There’s a bit of peace and serenity that the waterfront cities offer that is hard to find in the hustle and bustle of metro Vancouver.  Everybody says hello, whether they know you or not. You can’t help but smile and wish them a good day too.

Whether it is a short getaway or a vacation, Sunshine Coast can’t be beat.
